E-Class driving pleasure begins with the E 200 KOMPRESSOR. The supercharger technology increases the pressure in the intake system, thus improving the degree of cylinder charging, which in turn boosts output, particularly at low revs. The result is 135 kW (184 hp), which propels the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds. The peak torque is 250 Nm.
Yet the engine is quite restrained as far as noise is concerned. Frugal consumption and emissions which are within the EU4 limits make the E 200 KOMPRESSOR an economical and environmentally friendly car too.
(E 200 KOMPRESSOR: fuel consumption combined: 8.2-8.9 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 195-212 g/km)[1]
The "secret" of the V6 engines in the E 230, E 280, E 350 and E 350 CGI models lies in the sophisticated technology package. By way of example, all four camshafts can adjust depending on engine speed, thus ensuring high torque even at bottom-end revs. Furthermore, fuel consumption is reduced thanks to optimised combustion, while a balancer shaft ensures smoother running.
The 6-cylinder petrol engine under the bonnet of the E 350 CGI uses piezo injectors which inject the fuel directly into the combustion chamber. This improves mixture formation, resulting in virtually complete combustion with low pollutant emissions. The engine’s 215 kW (292 hp) are delivered seamlessly, with torque peaking at 365 Nm.
The E 280 and E 350 are also available with 4MATIC all-wheel drive for an even smoother ride, especially when road conditions are unfavourable.
(E 320: fuel consumption combined: 9.2–9.6 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 220-230 g/km; E 280: fuel consumption combined: 9.3–9.7 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 222–232 g/km; E 350: fuel consumption combined 9.7–10.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 231–244 g/km; E 350 CGI[2]: fuel consumption combined 8.7-9.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 208-219 g/km)[1]
Those who desire the type of driving feeling that only a V8 can offer are well catered for by the E 500 and the E 63 AMG. The key data for the E 500 – 5.5-litre displacement, an output of 285 kW (388 hp) and a peak torque of 530 Nm – say it all: a feeling of supreme assuredness prevails in every driving situation. The high-geared rear axle reduces the engine speed and, consequently, the noise level. The E 500 is also available with 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
The AMG high-performance powerplant in the E 63 AMG is the flagship engine in the E-Class range, boasting an output of 378 kW (514 hp).
(E 500: fuel consumption combined: 11.5 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 273 g/km; E 63 AMG: fuel consumption combined: 14.3 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 341 g/km)[1]
