Extremely sporty yet safe driving requires a number of prerequisites to be met. For instance anticipatory light. Like the standard bi-xenon headlamps. Or the optional Intelligent Light System (ILS) with its integrated cornering light function.
Active Body Control, ABC, ensures the necessary handling stability – even when taking swift evasive action at high speeds. It is standard equipment in the SL 500, the SL 600 and AMG models – for the SL 350 this system is optionally available. The active suspension lowers the vehicle body at high vehicle speeds by up to 15 millimetres, improving road-holding and aerodynamics: minimises airflow noise and reduces consumption.
Stability, including directional stability of the SL is the responsibility of the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®). Sensors register driver and vehicle behaviour. A microprocessor uses these data, and in critical situations it can automatically intervene with targeted brake impulses. Thanks to its highly-sensitive sensors, the system can even detect a sudden loss of tyre pressure and warn the driver. In case of need, a roll-over bar, also sensor-controlled, can extend in a split-second.
In order that even a full brake application can proceed without a hitch, the SL is equipped with ADAPTIVE BRAKE, an electrohydraulic brake system, which continuously monitors driver and vehicle behaviour. In critical situations the pressure in the brake lines is increased and the brake pads are brought close to the brake discs. Stepping on the pedal just once will then cause the SK to decelerate with all its power. ADAPTIVE BRAKE also offers a greater level of security when braking in a curve, and recognises a wet road surface. If necessary, the brake discs are "braked dry". Apart from this, the system reduces movements of the brake pedal when ABS cuts in, which counteracts the tendency of the wheels to lock, by adapting the brake pressure in short intervals.
