The high level of safety of the B-Class is based on the intelligent design of the crumple zone. This construction helps to prevent or minimise injuries to the driver and front passenger in the event of a head-on collision.
The occupants in the B-Class also have a significantly higher seating position in the B-Class than in a conventional car. This not only permits better all-round visibility, but also can be an advantage in a side-on collision.
All five seats feature three-point seat belts and head restraints as standard, while the two front seats are additionally equipped with active head restraints, belt tensioners and belt force limiters. The two outer rear seats feature belt tensioners. Further safety features include adaptive front airbags and head/thorax sidebags (enlarged sidebags which can provide protection for the head region) for the front seats.
Further standard equipment includes crash-responsive emergency lighting. When pyrotechnic restraint systems such as airbags or belt tensioners are deployed in the event of an accident, the hazard warning lamps are switched on, as is the interior lighting if the automatic interior lighting system is activated. If the optional light and sight package is specified, the footwell lighting is also switched on. That makes both orientation and rescue easier in the event of an emergency.
Windowbags and sidebags for the rear are available as an option. If the car is fitted with windowbags, the head/thorax-sidebags in the front are replaced by regular sidebags. The airbags are deployed selectively, that is, depending on the type and severity of the impact.
For the securing of a child seat, the rear of the B-Class is fitted as standard with ISOFIX child seat attachment points with Top Tether.
