When Mercedes-Benz first unveiled PRE-SAFE® in 2002, the primary aim was to combat the problem of the invaluable seconds that go to waste just before an accident happens. PRE-SAFE® can make highly effective use of this time. The sensors at the heart of the ESP® and BAS systems detect critical driving situations such as heavy oversteer or understeer, critical steering movements, panic braking and emergency stops. In the S-Class, PRE-SAFE® additionally is supported by the short-range sensors of DISTRONIC PLUS (optional extra).
The PRE-SAFE® electronics evaluate this information and, in typical hazardous situations, initiate preventive measures to protect the occupants: the front passenger seat can be put in a more favourable position, the side windows and the optionally available sliding sunroof can be closed and the seat belts tensioned. In addition, the chambers in the side bolsters of the optional multicontour seats or the dynamic multicontour seats can be filled with air to provide more space between seat and side wall (lets the occupants follow the movements of the vehicle better).
The PRE-SAFE® brake can provide additional assistance. To reduce impact speed further, and with it the severity of an accident, when the danger of a collision is detected the driver is warned not only audibly and visually, but also through his sense of touch. PRE-SAFE® thus underscores the Mercedes-Benz aspiration to ensure greater safety on the road with innovative technologies.
