Wherever the SLR Coupé may take you, you can rely on a highly intelligent safety system. After all, Mercedes-Benz has always been a pioneer in the development and advancement of automotive safety concepts.
The entire SLR Coupé bodyshell serves as a passive safety structure. The carbon monocoque, the safety cell, forms the core of the car’s body. The Gran Turismo is almost entirely constructed of carbon-fibre materials, making the SLR Coupé exceptionally safe as well as outstandingly light. The extremely impact-resistant material is used in aviation and space travel as well as in Formula 1. Furthermore, the use of carbon means that the bodyshell is capable of absorbing four to five times more energy than steel or aluminium constructions of the same weight.
A hard core wrapped in soft forms: the aerodynamic lines provide optimum roadholding, while a wealth of intricate detailing – from the steering to the sports suspension – ensures sporty yet extremely safe handling.
A total of six airbags, including standard-fit kneebags for the driver and passenger, ABS and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) are also included. But the SLR Coupé has more to offer besides: it comes with ceramic disc brakes that not only herald a significant weight-saving, they can also withstand frictional heat of up to 1200 degrees Celsius.
